Tourism in Bizkaia

Bizkaia is a land of contrasts. Bizkaia’s one hundred and fifty kilometres of coastline offer a series of delights for visitors, with its rocky cliffs overlooking the vast Cantabrian sea and its fine sandy beaches bordered by trees and river estuaries.

But perhaps the characteristic feature of this coastline are the deep clefts providing natural harbours for its many fishing villages. Here tradition is still very much part of everyday life, as can be seen in the colourful buildings and local fiestas and of course, in the local cuisine.

Despite the great appeal of Bizkaia’s seaside areas, the hinterland too has much to offer, with some delightful spots to visit in rich green surroundings, and architectural features of extraordinary beauty reflecting centuries of history.

A fine example is to be found amongst the towns and villages of the Durangaldea, a valley which exemplifies rural Bizkaia.

Here, nature has been especially generous and the towns’ medieval quarters and beautiful lordly villages are set against the unforgettable backdrop of majestic mountain ranges and thick green forests, in a landscape of lush vegetation and whimsical contrasts of colour. If you want to get a bird´s eye view of Durangaldea area, the best natural viewpoints are the slopes of Goiuria or Garai.
