BIZKAIA - Bilbao, a booming city

> Port of Bilbao, a gateway to the world

The Port hugs the banks of the Ría from Santurtzi into the very heart of Bilbao and is entwined in the urban fabric that has sprung up around it.

By the mid 1980’s, it was in need of a far-reaching transformation in order to ensure its competitiveness and efficiency. The aim was to abandon its riverside wharves and redeploy to larger areas that would suitably cater for the logistics facilities that are required of a port; so in 1992 work began on the enlargement of the installations at the mouth of the Nervión.

So far the associated works have resulted in the gaining of an area covering one million and a half square metres and 3,700 linear metres of moorage.

This meant freeing up land located along the banks of the Ría that have subsequently played a key role in the urban transformation of Metropolitan Bilbao.

In addition, the increase in the number of cruise ships calling at Bilbao has led to the construction of a terminal to provide an adequate service for this type of traffic. The said terminal is currently under construction at the Getxo Marina and is expected to be operating for the 2006 season.
