Capital city of Alava and seat of the Basque Government and Parliament, Vitoria-Gasteiz is a city undergoing constant expansion, having grown in the last 50 years from 50,000 inhabitants to its current 200,000.
Yet, perhaps more spectacular than these figures is the fact that Euskadi’s administrative capital has managed to grow in a balanced, harmonious fashion; not in vain does it rank among the top European cities in terms of quality of life.
Restoration of the mediaeval town is exemplary as is the relation between the original town and modern-day expansions; it has a large number of green areas and landscaped parks; its cultural and social facilities are capable of surprising experts, and the standard of its town planning is put forward as an example at international level.
