ALAVA - Sightseeing Vitoria-Gasteiz

> Ensanche Area

Between the old medieval city and the expansion area, the Ensanche, situated on the plain, there is a difference of several centuries and a considerable variation in height. The 19th century Ensanche, designed by a local architect called Olaguibel, is largely noteworthy for the excellent way in which the urban development was designed to overcome this steep slope, by building the arched promenade of Los Arquillos, which is highly functional and full of charm.

The Plaza de España was also designed by Olaguibel, in a Neo-classical style. It was commissioned by the Town Hall for the purpose of providing the city with a square in which to hold celebrations, bullfights and popular markets.

It leads into the romantic city, built following the arrival of the railway in 1862. There, running between the Plaza de España and the railway station, is one of the city’s main thoroughfares, Eduardo Dato Street. Despite its narrowness, it is today the liveliest part of the city, the scene of bustling social, commercial and financial activity.

A fine example of rhythm and proportion, with side-roads running off at right angles, flanked by balconies of intense whiteness and dotted with sculptures by major Basque artists; it is the domain of pedestrians and cyclists.

A key area in Vitoria’s Ensanche is the leafy park of La Florida, which extends along the promenade of La Senda, flanked by mansions that house institutions and museums.
