Vitoria-Gasteiz has had its own Museum for Contemporary Art, ARTIUM, a project promoted by the Regional Council of Alava and dedicated to the exhibition of its permanent collection, the organisation of temporary exhibitions and activities related to artistic creation and reflection on art at the present time. The ARTIUM building is located on the fringe of Vitoria-Gasteiz’s old town and now forms part of the city’s cultural offer, along with other institutions like the exhibition gallery in the former Water Reservoir, the Cultural Centre of Montehermoso, the Fournier Playing Card Museum and the Gothic cathedral of Our Lady.
Besides the museums and those centres in which contemporary art is either the unrivalled protagonist or plays a major role, there is a fine array of private galleries in the three regional capitals of the Basque Country, which nowadays do an excellent job in the promotion, dissemination and marketing of art.
