With the opening in 1997 of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the capital of Biscay became part of the international circuit of contemporary art. However, many years before, at the beginning of the sixties, the Museum of Fine Arts started to exhibit works of contemporary art in its galleries and today its collection of works is notable.
Euskadi’s interest in contemporary art in all its manifestations, from the conventional to the most experimental in plastic arts, is proven by the numerous galleries and institutions dedicated to contemporary art and the high standard attained by contemporary Basque artists.
Besides the museums and those centres in which contemporary art is either the unrivalled protagonist or plays a major role, there is a fine array of private galleries in the three regional capitals of the Basque Country, which nowadays do an excellent job in the promotion, dissemination and marketing of art.
