San Sebastián is known as the cultural capital of the Basque country because of the wide range of cultural activities that are held throughout the year. After the Christmas celebrations, on the 20th January the festivities connected with the city patron start with traditional Basque music and the “Tamborrada” drum tattoo.
There are three important events in Donostia which are a must for visitors. At the end of July, the city presents “Jazzaldia”, a classic festival within the international panorama, which had its first edition in 1966, and so has 39 years of history. During five days this festival converts the San Sebastian into a centre for international music. The city’s streets, squares and clubs fill with musicians and fans, creating an extraordinary event. In August is held the “Quincena Musical”, this year with its 66th anniversary, and in September the “Festival Internacional de Cine”, now a classic with 53 editions.
