The provincial capital of Alava and seat of the Basque Government and Parliament, Vitoria-Gasteiz is a city immersed in permanent expansion. Since its origins, it has remained faithful to its roots, whilst looking to the future with an ample array of prospects.
Urban planning has been a constant feature throughout its history, from the first medieval expansion at the beginning of the 13th century through to its modern neighbourhoods and outlying parks.
Its urban, architectural, archaeological and artistic wealth is well known, ranging from its museum network, with the flagship being the Artium Museum of Modern Art, through to its architectural heritage, consisting of numerous palaces, noble homes and religious buildings, highlights of which are the Gothic Cathedral of Santa María, which has recently been awarded the European Heritage Prize for the refurbishment project currently underway, or its medieval Old Quarter, declared an Historical Monument in 1997.
