The Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts is squeezed into one end of the Doña Casilda de Iturriza Park, close to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which it watched grow from the viewpoint of its protracted history and with the curiosity that anything new arouses, in the hope of being able to join forces.
It is brimming with art treasures that it displays to its visitors as
they walk through its spacious and welcoming halls.
A non-specialist museum that prides itself on housing an art collection
that is on a par with those in many of Europe’s finest museums,
one that many rate as Spain’s second best, behind the Prado. For
much of its history it has led a peaceful existence as an art gallery
visited by art lovers within its natural area of influence, whilst the
institutions that owned the museum and private benefactors amassed the
impressive art collection that is now housed within its walls.
The Museum’s collection, defined by its extensive chronology - ranging from the 12th century to the present day – and its major diversity of artistic schools and expressions, currently contains over six thousand items. A detail of its essential oeuvres includes works by El Greco, Moro, Murillo, Zurbarán, Ribera, Goya, Meléndez, Arellano, Paret, Benson, Mandjin, De Vos, Van Dyck, Gentileschi, Belloto, Ribot, Guiard, Regoyos, Zuloaga, Arteta, Gauguin, Cassatt, Ensor, Sorolla, Solana, Tàpies, Oteiza, Chillida, Caro, Saura and Bacon.
