> Arteleku, Art Factory

Upon contemplating the prevailing state of contemporary art in the 1980’s, in 1987 the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa lent its support to the creation of a site designed to promote contemporary art and culture.

Turning its back on conventional norms, Arteleku (meaning place for art in Basque) has gradually become a focal point for creating, reflecting, experimenting and disseminating art and culture, calling for a non-competitive approach to teaching, as well as for greater individualisation in the face of the overcrowding apparent in traditional areas of learning and instruction.

This curious “Place for Art”, is located on the outskirts of Donostia-San Sebastian, in the district of Loiola. It covers an area of 5,000 square meters, distributed over three floors.

Local and foreign artists, as well as all those interested in furthering their knowledge of contemporary art and creation, encounter professional support as well as a physical environment in which to work, research and exhibit. Its premises and furnishings are constantly being renewed to adapt to the ever more varied needs of modern day creators: a document centre specialising in contemporary art, a state-of-the-art multimedia hall, rooms for temporary use, conference hall, soundstage, industrial production workshops and so on.
